Why Isn’t Paper Feeding into the Copier?
Calendar Friday, December 5th, 2014
When paper won’t feed into a copier, it is easy to get frustrated and not think through the problem clearly. On many occasions, there is a simple fix that you can correct in a matter of minutes. It is also important to remember that the issue may not stem from the paper tray or the paper itself. For example, the copier may not be switched on or the rollers may be too dirty to pick up the paper. Review all of the following possible options before you call a technician.
Power issues
If the lights on the copy machine do not turn on or the fans do not start to run when you turn on the copier, switch it off and unplug it. Plug another device into the same outlet to make sure that the outlet is working properly. Plug the copier back in and check both the outlet and copier connections.
If applicable, locate the reset button. Typically it is located near the power plug connection on the machine itself. Push a sharp object, such as a paper clip, into the reset button. If none of these measures fix the power issue, contact a copier company.
Paper jam
If you have recently switched on the copier, give it ample time to warm up. If you are not sure how long it should take, consult the manual. If you still can’t start a copy job, check for improperly loaded paper trays and paper jams. Open the side and top copier panels and pull out any jammed or improperly loaded paper. Pull out all of the recently used paper trays and check for stapled together, bunched up, and folded upward or downward paper. Check the guides on the side of the paper feeds to ensure that they haven’t been positioned too loosely or tightly.
Dirty rollers
Sometimes paper won’t feed properly when the rollers are dirty. You should be able to see the rollers through the side and top panels. Clean them gently with a damp cloth to remove any dust and toner build up. If there is still visible dust, remove it with compressed air.
Error codes
Are there any error codes on the display? If you aren’t sure what they mean, check the manual. If they are related to the paper issue and you aren’t able to troubleshoot them yourself, call a technician.
