Why Is My Copier Printing Dark Pages?
Calendar Thursday, November 14th, 2013
Do you have copier pages that are coming out too dark? While this is a frustrating issue, the good news is that there are a number of simple solutions that can take care of the paper quality problem. With just a little bit of time and effort, you will have your copier up and running again with clear, evenly colored pages in no time.
Dark density setting
Most copiers are equipped with a density setting. Check the current setting before you look into other potential issues with the copier, as it may have a density setting that is too dark. Put the copier on a lower density setting and then run a new copy to see if the image is lighter.
Old drum
An old drum may result in image problems, including dark copies. If you believe that the drum is near the end of its lifespan, replacing it may take care of the issue. If the drum is housed inside of a replaceable toner cartridge, no special handling is required. However, if the drum is housed in a separate unit, you must follow specific instructions to avoid exposing it to direct sunlight.
Bad toner
Some of the toners on the market are considerably darker than toners that come directly from copy machine manufacturers. While there is not necessarily anything wrong with this difference, the market toners may produce copies that are much darker than normal. Attempt to adjust the density setting to compensate for the difference. If the problem persists, get in touch with your toner supplier.
Faulty toner cartridge
Sometimes there is an intrinsic problem with the toner cartridge itself that cannot be corrected with a machine setting such as density. If you believe that there is an issue with the cartridge, replace it and run a test copy to see if that fixes the issue. If it does not resolve the problem, get in touch with the cartridge supplier.
Dirty internal components
There are a number of copier parts including the connections, internal lenses, paper path, and mirrors that require cleaning on a regular basis. When one or more of these parts becomes dirty, the copier may produce pages that are darker than normal. A professional should always clean these copier parts. When they are not cleaned properly, the machine may get damaged.
