3 Common Copier Errors

Calendar Thursday, July 17th, 2014

Copy machines are a necessary part of all businesses, but they can also be rather finicky. Everyone who’s used a copier regularly has probably experienced a copier issue. We’ve collected the three most common copier issues, and how to resolve them, to make your business run just a bit smoother.

1. Misfed Paper

Believe it or not, the most common copier error is misfed paper. When paper is not aligned correctly in the paper try, it can lead to skewed copies — that is, copies that appear straight when you put them on the glass, but come out of the copier crooked. While this is the most common copier error, it’s also the easiest to fix. Remove the paper tray and simply re-feed the paper into it, making sure everything is straight, and properly lined up.

If you’re experiencing regular paper jams, misfed paper might be the culprit as well. To fix this common issue, check the paper tray. If you are still having problems with skewed or mis-aligned copies, or you experience regular paper jams, you should call your copier repair service. The problem may be more intricate and should be dealt with by a professional.

2. Spotty Copies

Another common copier error is spotty copies. These are copies that seem to have debris on them. It might show up as splotches, particles or a line straight through the copy. The first step in dealing with this issue is to clean the glass with a household glass cleaner. The problem may be as simple as dirty glass. After all, many fingers touch a copier each and every day, so it’s bound to get dirty at some point. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try feeding the copy though the document feeder. If the copy comes up clean, you’ll know it is a glass issue.

3. Error Codes

Error codes are another common complaint when it comes to copiers. Error codes can render the copier unusable until the problem is resolved. While many error codes come up to inform you of a problem with the copier, there are times when an error code appears for a problem, but sticks after the problem is solved. To remedy this issue, try resetting the copier. This should clear the error code, unless there is a serious problem. If the error code is still present when the copier reboots, you’ll need to call in a repair service to look at the issue.
